How does your current health impact a future pregnancy? Is your body ready to grow a baby? At a preconception visit, a Desert Blossom birth midwife will examine your health history – including medical conditions and lifestyle behaviors – and discuss how you can prepare for the healthiest pregnancy possible. This may include anything from increasing your folic acid intake to getting up to date on vaccines. The first eight weeks of pregnancy are incredibly important for fetal growth, so your health and nutrition leading up to that period matters. Women with complicated health histories or genetic issues may be referred to our maternal-fetal medicine physician colleagues.
From the very start of your pregnancy, you’ll have the opportunity to get to know our certified nurse-midwives through personalized, detailed appointments. We take pride in our one-on-one approach throughout each pregnancy. We’re here to answer any questions you may have, and explain all recommended tests and procedures. Registered diagnostic medical sonographers perform ultrasounds in our office – and we send results to your phone for sharing! We design our prenatal care visits to be interactive, family-centered experiences; we encourage your partner and/or other family to join you.
Labor and Birth
Our midwives’ hands-on approaches to labor and birth set Desert Blossom Women’s Care apart. We recognize and respect your ability to grow and birth your baby, and we are here to offer any support and care needed. Our Desert Blossom midwives provide support for women who want low-intervention, medication-free births, as well as those who want epidural anesthesia for pain relief during labor. We encourage walking, hydrotherapy, intermittent fetal monitoring and self-directed pushing in the appropriate situations. We also strongly support VBAC (vaginal birth after cesarean) and VBAC 2 (vaginal birth after two cesareans). Our midwives offer the most thorough and nurturing care in Southern Arizona perinatal services.
Thanks to the help of collaborating physicians at Valley Perinatal, we assist with cesarean sections for women who need them. This typically includes women pregnant with multiple babies, and those with maternal medical conditions, problems with the placenta, or breech presentation. Fortunately, even if you are planning to have a cesarean section, you still can receive high-quality, personalized care from our Arizona perinatal certified nurse-midwives. They have specialty training as Cesarean First Assists, which means our Desert Blossom birth midwives can assist the obstetrician during your cesarean section, and provide nurturing support before and after the procedure.
Although having a baby is an exciting time, we know how hard the emotional and physical adjustments to motherhood can be – and our midwives are here to provide any support and care needed. We’ll work with you throughout your birth recovery to outline what changes and symptoms to expect, and when you can start incorporating certain activities, such as exercise. Each new mother experiences the postpartum period differently, so we strive to customize care – from family planning to postpartum mood disorder treatment – to meet your needs and aid your transition to motherhood.
We believe a new mother needs support to have a successful breastfeeding experience. Desert Blossom birth midwives advocate for the “Golden Hour” of uninterrupted skin-to-skin contact between mother and baby after birth, as well as continued skin-to-skin time throughout your hospital stay. Our midwives are here to help ensure you receive any tools and resources needed to support breastfeeding. We also are skilled at assessing and treating breastfeeding problems such as mastitis.
