Natalie Andress, CNM became interested in working with mothers after watching her sister have a baby and witnessing how her nurse cared for her. As a labor and delivery nurse, she felt that she could be a better support for women if she got to know them, their families and their desires for their labor and birth if she cared for them in the clinical setting. This experience led her to become interested in Midwifery as well.
Early in her training she learned how to guide women in their care and planning for their families. Natalie feels that it is important to distinguish between the role of a nurse and a midwife. Nurses are trained to teach people how to take care of themselves. As a Certified Nurse Midwife she sees pregnancy as a normal processes of life, not an illness. Of course the help and support of physicians is needed for those who have illnesses that complicate pregnancy, but healthy women can be cared for by midwives that can support them in the birth they desire.
As the first person in her family to earn a Masters degree, Natalie is proud that she can take her experience as a Certified Nurse Midwife and as a mother to create a safe environment for mothers to have their babies, but also create a partnership in their care. It is important to Natalie that she build a trusting relationship so that the patient understands that she holds their best interest in mind.
Natalie always starts by letting patients know that she is a partner in their care, establishing a relationship of trust so that if medical intervention is necessary with the normal process of pregnancy, labor, and birth they understand that she has a medical reason to do so. She aims to create a safe place for them to have their baby and provide their care, listening to what they want and trying if possible to achieve their goals, and communicate to them what needs to be done to continue keeping them and their babies healthy.
Natalie loves watching a couple become a family or add to their family and hopes that the care she has provided them will make it an unforgettable experience for them.
Natalie is proud of her children and is honored to be their mother. She loves to go with her kids to movies or even new places to explore. She also loves to travel, cook and bake and has taken Italian cooking classes.
